The northeastern front of the West Yellowstone flow as seen from stop 3. The physical mixing of lava in the flow created the chaotic appearance of the rock on the right side of the photo.

The western end of the Nez Perce Creek flow impeded the progress of the northeastern end of the West Yellowstone flow. From stop 3, the tall canyon wall across the Firehole River is the front of the West Yellowstone flow. Parts of the wall appear chaotic, reflecting the mixing of the moving lava along the flow front.

At stop 3 you are actually standing on the front of the Nez Perce Creek flow, and the rocks exposed along the east (left) side of the road provide an excellent glimpse of the flow’s internal structure. Contorted, nearly vertical layers of rhyolite reflect the ductile movement of the hot, viscous lava as it was smeared out within the flow. Although these layers are striking, most of the rock forming the outcrop is a rhyolite breccia made of angular clasts ranging from baseball-sized to the size of a microwave oven. The angular clasts developed as the cooled outer portions of the flow fragmented and were reincorporated into the still-moving lava. Good views of the breccia can be seen on the northern end of the roadcut.
